The aim of this study was to investigate the land use practiced on family farms (FF), managed under crop-livestock integration (CLP) in the watershed and to evaluate the quality of milk. 14 FFs were characterized and grouped regarding soil use (Group 1, 2 and 3) and the quality of milk was monitored during the months of May, 2010 to February 2011. In these milk samples, we evaluated the fat, protein and non-fat solids content. It can be observed that the use of soil in a crop-livestock integration system, when the grain cultivation is prioritized over the animal grazing, influences negatively the fat and protein content, on average 6.3% and 5.4%, respectively, especially during the summer. Thus, the planning of the use of soil in FF managed under CLP is essential, because the competition between the activities was reflected in the quality of milk. The FF specialized in dairy farming produces better quality milk in all annual seasons.

RESUMO

Panic disorder is a common and potentially debilitating anxiety disorder that can adversely affect patients' personal, social, work, and academic lives. It may go unrecognized for long periods, because physical symptoms may mimic other conditions. Typical onset is during late adolescence and early adulthood. Stressors (e.g., new environments, loss of social support, relationship difficulties, academic pressure, substance use) may trigger or exacerbate panic symptoms. Evaluation by a healthcare professional paying close attention to medical and psychological aspects of panic disorder can lead to a proper diagnosis and effective management with medication (e.g., SSRIs) and psychotherapy.

RESUMO

While the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants are safe and effective agents that are frequently prescribed for the treatment of depression, non-SSRI antidepressants also have potential benefits to offer the depressed patient. A review of the literature offers guidelines for choosing between these two therapeutic categories.

RESUMO

Ipecac abuse must be considered when working with individuals at risk, particularly those with eating disorders. Medical complications such as myopathy and gastrointestinal and other toxic effects can occur with ipecac abuse, the gravity of which must not be underestimated. Education about ipecac abuse and toxicity is extremely important. Discontinuation of ipecac use usually results in recovery from the harmful effects. College healthcare professionals can play an important role in the education and treatment of this potentially hazardous method of weight control.

RESUMO

Obsessions and compulsions vary in frequency and intensity. Many individuals have habits that cause minimal or no disruption of their lives. OCD, however, causes significant distress and interference with daily life. The problem may go unnoticed by anyone except the involved individual, or it may involve family, friends, and acquaintances. The disorder can be disabling, adversely affecting a student personally, socially, and occupationally. Those who are significantly affected by OC symptoms are encouraged to seek treatment. Behavior therapy and medications are extremely beneficial in helping to relieve symptoms of OCD. Clomipramine and fluoxetine (Prozac) are new drugs available in the US that appear to be effective for OCD symptoms. Several other anti-OCD medications may be available in the US within the next few years. It is important that students and others on campus be made aware that OCD is more common than previously recognized, that more persons with OCD are seeking help, and that effective treatment is available. This "secretive," often disabling disorder is more open now, and it is to be hoped that more individuals will take advantage of current, effective evaluation and treatment modalities.

RESUMO

Laxative abuse is an increasingly popular weight-loss method on college campuses, particularly for individuals with eating disorders. It is a dangerous habit, which many mistakenly believe will prevent caloric absorption and weight gain. Serious medical problems that may occur with laxative abuse include electrolyte and fluid imbalance, structural and functional colonic changes, and allergic reactions. Because patients are often secretive about abusing laxatives, laxative abuse should be considered if there is suspicion about the use of potentially destructive weight-control methods or about an eating disorder. A complete history and physical exam are essential parts of an assessment that should also include questions about diet, eating and exercise habits, and body image. Laboratory tests may provide additional supportive data. Treatment includes education, discontinuation of laxatives, medical follow-up as necessary, and psychotherapy. A college campus is an ideal forum for education, referral, and prevention programs.
